The Simple Answer

Branding - Packaging Design - Marketing

This project was to create a company selling reusable alternatives to plastic. For this project I created the business model, branding, packaging design and marketing in the form of a digital media campaign and pop-up food cart.

Project Planning

This project was for my final year project at university, I wanted to create the company, branding, packaging design and marketing material for a company selling reusable alternatives to plastic in the form of on-the-go lunchbox items - a cutlery set, bento box and reusable water bottle. To start the project I created a list of "aims and objectives" to keep me on track throughout.

1. To create a well rounded and well-thought-out small, local company to sell plastic alternative products in the form of on-the-go sustainable items.

2. To create a personalised and locally aware company, to focus on local issues related to plastic waste, such as the effect plastic has on local wildlife.

3. To create the branding and house style for this company that reflects the company’s ethos and philosophies.

4. To create products for this company, that reflect the personalised, local, ‘handmade’ feel of the company which the target demographic wants to invest their money into, to aid these local issues.

5. To create an effective digital marketing campaign through social media, to create brand awareness and reflect the ethos of the company.

6. To create interactive marketing, which will not only aim to sell the company’s products but also to get members of the demographic actively involved and interested in these local issues.

Here you can view my final colour scheme. I next went on to design my logo, which I followed a similar process to create - sketches, inspiration and final product.

My finished image version of the logo. Below I have also created some alternative versions of the logo which would be used for placements where the icon version would be too large - ie. on the packaging.

Character Design

The next stage of my project was to design my characters, in the form of three water birds to support the brand. I started off wanting to create these in Cinema 3D as cute cartoon characters, however, after establishing a strong style and branding formula I decided that 2D more realistic sketches were the way to go.

Packaging Design

My next step was to start designing the packaging for my three products - a bento lunch box, water bottle and cutlery set. I used all of my branding and style decisions up until this point heavily within this stage to get a look and feel that suited the company BUT also the intended purpose of housing my products.

The next few images show the sketching and then refining of all of the graphical elements which would appear on the packaging such as drawings of the product, the sticker design and any other decoration elements.

I also wanted to create a design for the inside of the packaging which would explain, in a fun and interesting way, how to properly recycle the packaging.

These are my finished packaging designs, showing the front and back views. Use the arrow to look through.

Product Photoshoot

I created some prototype mock-ups of my packaging designs as well as the digital mock-ups so that I could do a product and packaging photoshoot.

Here are all three of my pack shots edited and ready to use for my marketing!

Marketing 01 - Social Media

For this project, I created two different types of marketing, the first being a digital media campaign. I already had my packaging shoot ready to go but I wanted to create some other elements.

Here are my finished storyboards for the 10-second bumper advertisements, each one is telling a short story about the three birds I chose for the project. You can look through them by scrolling using the arrows!

Marketing 02 - Pop-Up Food Cart

The second type of marketing I wanted to create was a unique experience for my audience, which would be in the form of a pop-up food cart. I wanted to create an experience where customers could buy food and gain a discount if they were to buy my products alongside their meal to reuse over and over for a similar discount.

My next step was to create some supporting material for the pop-up. My first step in this was to design an interactive screen to showcase the menu, the products and a live Instagram feed where customers could hashtag their pictures and see them appear.
